Is Birth Control Murder?
By Allison Conyers
Well, it seems that one Texas minister has decided to voice an opinion that we here at NFPRHA, along with folks like Cristina Page at Birthcontrolwatch.org, have been tracking for quite a while. Dr. Thomas White, a baptist preacher and a teacher at a local seminary college, gave a speech earlier this month where he said explicitly that taking birth control pills is a sin and that it constitutes "murder of a life." Chris Hawes at WFAA in Fort Worth, Texas broke the story today. He also found this video of Dr. White giving a sermon at the Southwestern Baptist Thelogical Seminary. Where he also confesses that he and his wife used birth control pills years before. So, does using contraception mean that that you've committed murder? I don't think so. The American Medical Association and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists don't think so. Since they support access to contraception, I doubt they would support access to murder. And, fortunately, at least one other Baptist pastor, Dwight McKissic, of Cornerstone Baptist Church, has been willing to speak out against White and say unequivocally that no, birth control is not murder and it is not sinful.
